Football: Lustrinelli leaves the Swiss M21 team for an old love

The persistent rumors of recent days around Mauro Lustrinelli were confirmed this Thursday morning by the Swiss Football Association (ASF): the 46-year-old from Ticino is leaving his post as coach of the national U21 team with immediate effect to become the head coach of FC Thun, in the Challenge League.

The former Swiss international (12 caps, 0 goals) joined ASF in 2017 as coach of the Swiss U16 team. Since March 2018, he had been at the head of Les Rougets, which he had just qualified for Euro 2023 in Georgia and Romania. Mauro Lustrinelli, who was under contract with ASF until the end of the Euro 2023 campaign, leaves his post with a very positive record of 22 wins, 3 draws and 8 defeats for a total of 33 matches led.

In Thun, where he signed for three seasons, the technician born in Bellinzona is preparing to find “his house”, he who defended the colors of Oberland as a player (112 matches, 51 goals) before taking the reins of the club as interim coach in 2016/2017 (11 games, 1.64 points/game).

Mauro Lustrinelli’s successor as coach of the Swiss U21 team will be announced at a later date. The next Les Rougets gathering is scheduled for September 2022.
