Football: Former Werder manager Willi Lemke dies

This was announced by his family. Lemke worked for Werder from 1981 to 2016 as managing director and later as chairman of the board of directors.

Together with coach Otto Rehhagel, he shaped the club’s successful period. With Andreas Herzog, Werder won the German championship in 1993 and the German Cup in 1994. In 1992, the North Germans – still without the Viennese midfielder – won the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

In 2008, Lemke also took on the role of UN Special Advisor on Sport for Peace and Development, a position he held until 2016.
