Excluded by UEFA, Russian clubs seize the CAS
Banished due to the war in Ukraine, CSKA Moscow, Dynamo, Zenit and Sochi have appealed against their exclusion from European competitions next season.
The decision adopted by UEFA deprived Zenit of its direct ticket to the group stage of the next C1.

Four Russian football clubs announced on Friday that they had filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against their banishment from European competitions, in 2022/2023, decided by UEFA, because of the conflict in Ukraine.
“Our club, along with three other Russian Premier League clubs – Zenit Saint Petersburg, Dynamo Moscow and Sochi – appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne against UEFA’s decision taken on May 2, 2022, to ban Russian clubs from European competitions,” CSKA Moscow said in a statement. “All the clubs have requested that their complaint be examined as a matter of urgency,” the statement said. CSKA Moscow “aspires to participate in European competitions”, he adds.
A strong measure
In early May, UEFA announced that “no Russian club” would participate in the 2022/2023 season of European club competitions, namely the Champions League, the Europa League or the Europa League Conference.
This strong measure has reinforced the sidelining of Russian football, already excluded at the end of February by FIFA from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The decision adopted by UEFA deprived Zenit Saint-Petersburg, crowned champion of Russia 2022, of its direct ticket for the group stage of the next C1.
