Football: Dani Alves is sentenced to prison for sexual abuse

The incident must have taken place in a nightclub in Barcelona during the morning of New Year’s Eve 2022. Alves must also pay 1.7 million in damages to the young woman, who herself testified that she was the victim of a rape.

40-year-old Alves admits he was at the nightclub but denies the charges and says he is innocent.

“The court considers that it is proven that the victim did not consent, and that there is evidence, apart from the plaintiff’s testimony, that a rape took place,” reads a letter in the judgment, according to Reuters. The verdict can be appealed.

Imprisoned for over a year

– I was there with more people who had fun. Everyone knows that I love to dance, to have fun but without invading other people’s spaces, Alves has said.

Alves has been imprisoned since January last year because the risk of escape was deemed high. Brazil does not extradite its own citizens convicted in other countries.

His last club was Mexican Pumas who broke with Alves in connection with the arrest in January last year.

Alves played in Barcelona between 2008 and 2016 and another period in 2022. He has also represented Juventus, Paris SG and Sao Paulo, among others. He is one of the most meritorious players in football history with 43 titles. He played 126 senior international matches with Brazil between 2006 and 2022.

Alves won the Olympics with Brazil in 2021 and the Copa America in 2007 and 2019.
