Football: convicted of rape in 2017, David Goodwillie will not play for Scottish club Raith Rovers

After the disputes with the justice of the 2018 world champion Benjamin Mendy – who will go on trial next July for rape, attempted rape and sexual assault – and England international Mason Greenwood – rape and violence once morest his partner -, another scandalous rape case, this time in Scotland, with Scottish international striker David Goodwillie.

The arrival of the 32-year-old center forward at Raith Rovers (Scottish D2) has, in fact, created controversy since the beginning of the week because of the player’s past which emerged at the time of his signing. He was convicted of rape and ordered to pay damages in a civil case in 2017. He was also fined 300 euros for hitting a man in a Stirling nightclub in 2008 and pleaded guilty to assaulting a man in Glasgow city center in 2012.

The club apologizes

The club had however indicated that the reasons for this recruitment were sporting. Since his conviction, David Goodwillie has been playing in the Scottish 3rd Division at Clyde where he has scored 95 goals in 151 games. His experience and his efficiency in front of goal had therefore seduced the leaders of Raith Rovers, currently 4th in the Championship, who are aiming for a rise in the elite. But the arrival of the striker has caused a wave of indignation since Monday.

Two directors resigned in protest, then sponsors withdrew and finally the women’s teams decided to sever their ties with the club. Finally, Raith Rovers on Wednesday apologized to supporters, sponsors and players for “the anguish and anger caused in recent days” The chairman of the board, John Sim, even declared that the club “bitterly regrets” to have signed David Goodwillie, that he will not play and that discussions were going to start with him to break his contract.
