Newcastle fans were certainly able to celebrate a great victory once morest Arsenal (2-0), but they were especially afraid for their Swiss defender on Monday in the Premier League. It’s a big blow for Gunners in search of C1.
The incident took place just following the break of this late game of the English championship so important for the Gunners of Granit Xhaka. But the challenge of the C1 was quickly forgotten, when Fabian Schär, in a duel with his London opponent Eddie Nketiah, was violently hit in the head and remained on the ground for long seconds, seeming to be inanimate, and causing a shivers down the spine of the spectators.
His teammates rushed to him for help, made sure the 20-year-old St. Gallen hadn’t swallowed his tongue, before waving vehemently at the Magpies medical staff. Fortunately, the Swiss was finally able to get out of the lawn on his own, but visibly stunned. He had to give up his place following several minutes of worry to Jamaal Lascelles.
This accident, which chilled everyone a little, did not prevent Newcastle from leaving their public for this season on a high note. Relegated in the middle of the season, when the club was bought by a Saudi fund, the Magpies finally escaped quietly thanks, also, to a change of coach and some 100 million francs invested in the transfer market.
The defeat is on the other hand hard to digest for Arsenal. The Gunners put themselves a goal by White (55th), just following the exit of Schär. At the end of the game, it was Guimaraes, the star rookie of Newcastle’s winter transfer window, who sealed the score of the match. The Londoners thus missed the opportunity to move up to 4th place from Tottenham, the last jump seat for the next Champions League.
