Oxalic acid is an acid that is ingested through various foods, but is also a waste product of some metabolic processes. It is harmless in small amounts, but inhibits the absorption of some minerals in food. In large quantities, however, it can cause serious health problems.
People who are prone to urinary stones are particularly at risk: oxalic acid-containing kidney stones are particularly common. There are also diseases (hyperoxaluria) that result in increased excretion of oxalic acid through the kidneys, which further increases the risk of kidney stones. In the body, oxalic acid not only leads to kidney disease, the organic compound is also associated with joint pain (arthralgia), joint effusion and breast cancer.
In the picture gallery you can find out which foods are rich in oxalic acid and should therefore only be consumed in moderation.
