Ukmergė, at least according to the district municipality, is happy with this campaign that started in May. Since then, (May-November 2023) the municipality of Ukmergė district says that it has already distributed 11,344 sets of orange bags for food waste.
It was distributed in various ways – the bags can be obtained free of charge in 3 places: Ukmergės city council, the large-sized waste collection site and UAB “Ukmergės butų ūkis”. There were also actions when volunteers carried bags to the yards of houses, etc.
“There have been no complaints from residents about having to pick up the bags themselves,” assures Daiva Zimblienė, deputy head of the municipality’s Information Technology and Public Relations Department.
It is not very difficult to count the amount of food waste managed during this period. Ukmerge simply compared how much mixed municipal waste was collected during the same period last year and how much this year: “For comparison, in 2022 May-September collected – more than 4 thousand 666 tons of mixed waste, and in 2023 during the same period – more than 4 thousand. 212 tons of mixed waste.
This shows that after sorting food waste, mixed food waste has decreased by 454 tons.”
