Food Poisoning Risk: Ukrainian Residents in Flooded Areas Advised to Stop Eating Fish

Residents of flooded areas in Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions have been prevented from catching, selling and eating fish, amid warnings of the risk of food poisoning.

And the Ukrainian Ministry of Health published a statement saying: “In the Mykolaiv region, a local committee was convened on environmental and ecological safety issues and emergency situations due to the consequences of the Kakhovka Dam explosion, and it was found that there was an epidemic of fish in the affected municipalities.”

He added, “It is forbidden to catch and sell fish, and residents are advised to refrain from eating fish.”

Ukraine’s Ministry of Health also noted that in the next three to five days, you will notice a plague of fish in the flooded areas of southern Ukraine due to the rapid decrease in the water level, adding: “It is strictly forbidden to collect and consume such fish.”

The Ministry of Health added that there is a risk of food poisoning, and advised not to drink or use the water of rivers and wells, and the water should be boiled even to wash fruits and vegetables.

Specialists note that among the symptoms of food poisoning are abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and high body temperature.

For his part, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said, on Wednesday, the day following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in the south of his country, that Russia had caused “one of the worst environmental disasters in recent decades.”

“Dozens of towns and villages will find themselves facing problems with drinking water and access to irrigation water supplies,” the Ukrainian official said in a speech delivered remotely during an event organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, describing the act that Kiev blames on Russia as a “crime once morest humanity.” and “environmental genocide”.

For his part, the head of the Nova Kakhovka district administration, Vladimir Leontyev, said:

  • More than 30,000 cubic meters of water flows every second from the Kakhovka Dam into the riverbed, sweeping away parts of the collapsed foundation of the dam.
  • The water level in Nova Kakhovka actually dropped as of 9 am by half a metre.
  • About 100 people are still trapped in the Datci-Korsun area following the Kakhovksaya hydroelectric power station was destroyed and land flooded.
