“The rise in food insecurity accelerated in the second half of 2022 and now concerns 16% of French people declaring that they do not eat enough”, indicates a Crédoc study published on Wednesday.
Food insecurity has gained ground in 2022. According to the results of a survey by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Crédoc) published this Wednesday, May 17, 16% of French people said at the end of last year that they “did not have enough to eat.” A rate that increased by four points between July 2022 and November 2022.
At the same time, the rate of French people saying they can “eat all the food you want” went from 44% to 39% over this same period. In April 2016, this rate was 50%.
24% of young people concerned
“Food insufficiency”, on the rise in recent years, has experienced a “sudden increase” since 2022 and “is found in all socio-demographic categories”, can we read in the study.
“High inflation, particularly on food products, explains at least in part the increase in this form of precariousness. Three-quarters of the people concerned cite the lack of money as the reason for their situation”, explains the Crédoc.
Nearly one in four young people under 25 (24%) is in “quantitative food insufficiency. “In comparison, 17% of 50-59 year olds are in this case, and 7% of 60-69 year olds”, notes the study.
The Crédoc stresses that food insecurity “comes on top of other forms of fragility”, such as housing, relational isolation “and more particularly health.”
“People who report suffering from a disability, a chronic illness or a long-term condition, or who report that their state of health is not satisfactory, are more likely to lack food than people who say in good health”, warns the Crédoc.
