Food Industry Challenges: Escaping Customers and Economic Impact – FEVIA’s Concerns

This situation worries FEVIA, the federation of the food industry sector, which is seeing more and more customers escape outside our borders. According to Anne Reul, the general manager of FEVIA Wallonia, the phenomenon is detrimental to the economy of our country: “50% of Belgians live less than 50 kilometers from a border. It has been found that those who go there, generally go there 8 times a year. More and more of our fellow citizens will unfortunately buy their products abroad, to the detriment of our companies”.

According to experts, Belgian citizens have their role to play in this equation, but not only. “The government has an interest in lowering taxes and excise duties, mainly on beverages. The food industry also has a role to play. An estimated 35-70 players raised their prices too much during the Covid period“explains Pierre-Alexandre Billiet, Professor at the Solvay Business School.

On the French side, an increase in excise duty on beverages is announced for the end of the year. Their prices should therefore increase on the other side of the border.
