Food, hygiene, drugstore – The real inflation figures – News

2023-10-06 13:36:07

Since the successive crises (Covid, war in Ukraine, explosion in energy prices, increases in raw material prices, etc.), the prices of consumer products (food, hygiene-beauty, maintenance) have continued to increase. Making a return to pre-crisis levels illusory. To assess the real inflation experienced by consumers on these products sold in supermarkets, we use our own in-store readings. And the observation is implacable: not only is inflation much higher than official data but it is partly uncorrelated with any economic reality. This “overinflation” on everyday products can be explained by the margins and profits earned by a few large groups in the food industry and distribution. Every month, we update our data on price trends in order to closely monitor what consumers pay when they check out at a supermarket. We have thus been able to measure real inflation since the end of 2021.
