The results of the French Elfe research indicate that children who are less exposed to food allergens before the age of 10 months have a twice as high risk of developing a food allergy before the age of 5 and a half.

It is essential to eat in a balanced and diversified way from an early age. A recent study published in the journal Allergy by the French cohort Elfe highlights a correlation between the food diversification late in children and the risk of developing allergies. The study, which included 6,662 children without allergic manifestations before the age of 2 months, collected data on their diet between 3 and 10 months as well as their subsequent allergic reactions. “Scientists have found that only 62% of children started food diversification over the recommended period, i.e. between 4 and 6 months”said the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRAE), reports BFM TV.

In a note of recommendations issued in 2021, Public Health France (SpF) advised parents to introduce from the start of the food diversification, between 4 and 6 months, all food groups, even those known to be allergens such as eggs, fish, wheat or even dairy products. Following the study, the researchers quantified the link between the delay in introducing major allergens and the risk of developing allergies food.
“They observed that for 1 child in 10, at least 2 major allergens (…) are not yet introduced into the diet at the age of 10 months”, revealed INRA.
