Food: 40% of products are threatened with shortage!


Manufacturers are sounding the alarm: if prices don’t rise, they won’t be able to produce.

Impossible not to realize it: the prices of food (like many other products) are soaring. At checkout, distributors also observe this: the amount spent is the same, but the number of lines on the receipt is reduced. Clearly, consumers are making choices and crossing off certain items from their shopping list. But, in the future, they might well be deprived of many products, simply becoming unaffordable to produce.

Already heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, producers seemed to see the end of the tunnel at the start of the year. The measures put in place by the government were bearing fruit, until war broke out and dashed their hopes. For 30% of companies, producing is no longer profitable. The profitability of Belgian food companies has fallen to a historically low level, barely 2.8%.
