Fooball/NCAA: Jim Harbaugh signs five-year block extension with Michigan

Jim Harbaugh, the University of Michigan coach, has agreed to a new five-year contract through the 2026 season, the school announced Wednesday.

The new signing comes exactly two weeks following Harbaugh’s high-profile interview with the Minnesota Vikings on Feb. 2, National Signing Day.

“I love Michigan football, the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor community,” Harbaugh said in a statement. My family and I are excited to continue to lead this football program, and are grateful for the support our athletic department and university administration have shown the team. I appreciate everything our players, coaches and staff do to excel on and off the football pitch. My excitement for tomorrow, the day following and every day following is higher than ever, and we’re ready to hit the training ground and begin preparations for the 2022 season. Go Blues! »

Last fall, Harbaugh led Michigan to the program’s first Big Ten title since 2004, with a 42-3 victory over Iowa at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Wolverines entered the College Football Playoff for the first time, but lost to eventual national champion Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Michigan did not immediately provide the contract or terms of the new agreement.

Michigan won 12 games in 2021 for only the third time in school history, tying the 1905 and 1997 team total win record. The Wolverines won the Big Ten East Division title with a 42-27 win over No. 2 Ohio State to end the regular season.

“Jim has done a great job coaching and developing the young men in our football program,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement. Last season Jim, the staff and the players had a memorable season that will live on in our memory for a long time. As the coach said, this is just the start. »
