Kédougou, Feb 15 (APS) – The populations of the district of Fongolimbi (Kédougou region) want the road leading to their locality to the regional capital to be tarred, to get out of the isolation from which they have “suffered since independence” with a negative impact on economic development.
This locality located on the mountain which constitutes the border with Guinea Conakry, is one of the richest in natural resources in the region of Kédougou. These products are difficult to transport to the central market of Kédougou pending the construction of the 28 km long road.
”We want the Fongolimbi road to be built now. Fongolimbi is the stronghold of the Kédougou region. We are suffering too much,” lamented Samba Camara, mayor of the commune of Fongolimbi.
Speaking in an interview granted to the APS, on the sidelines of the human investment day organized by the populations, Mr. Camara recalled that the district of Fongolimbi is full of “a lot of potential in natural resources, in particular mangoes, monkey bread, fonio, dates and other forest products”.
He welcomed the initiative of the people who, through a day of human investment, tried to make the road and the mountain of Fongolimbi more accessible.
”People yesterday felt the need to use their strength to facilitate access of vehicles and users to the mountain, because we are in the period of mangoes and other natural products,” he said.
The mayor of the municipality of Fongolimbi also deplored the delay in the construction of rural roads by the PUDC (Emergency Community Development Program) in its second phase.
Samba Camara reminded the President of the Republic of his promise to open up the district of Fongolimbi, made in 2012.
