Folk dances and street closures.. A Syrian wedding in Berlin raises controversy

Social media was abuzz with a video that spread from the German capital, Berlin, and showed a Syrian wedding with distinction.

Young Syrians from Deir ez-Zor province in the northeast of the country appeared dancing and singing in the middle of a wide street in Berlin to celebrate one of them’s wedding.

To the tunes of local folk traditional music, young people from the well-known “Al-Shaitat” tribe swayed, amid criticism of this behavior, as some considered that there was no justification for closing the main streets in the city because of the concert.

Controversy and irony: freedom or error?

Amid the uproar and the wave of ridicule, others saw that these are customs and traditions inherited in the governorate and that everyone should respect them, bearing in mind that it is not permissible to close the streets.

It is noteworthy that the Federal Statistics Office in Germany had announced that the total number of foreigners who obtained German citizenship jumped by 20% in 2021, and reached nearly 131,600, including 19,100 Syrians.
