FMX 2025: RHYTHM OF CHANGE
The overarching theme for FMX 2025 is RHYTHM OF CHANGE, designed to provoke thought and discussion about the future of production technologies in the creative arts. This theme poses a pivotal question: How can these evolving technologies not only enhance but also support the artistic goals and deeper intentions of creators who strive to foster connections through their work?
Participants can anticipate in-depth conversations surrounding the increasing prevalence of sharing platforms, the significance of open standards, and a variety of innovative initiatives that have surfaced recently. A particular emphasis will be placed on cross-platform collaboration and the challenges posed by both physical and subjective distances, as well as the need for interoperability amidst the disruptions currently reshaping film production.
Paul Debevec joins FMX 2025 as Program Chair
Among the event’s highlights, industry luminary Paul Debevec has been named Program Chair for FMX 2025. Currently serving as the chief research officer at Netflix’s Eyeline Studios in Los Angeles, Debevec is at the forefront of R&D for visual effects and virtual production. His work brilliantly incorporates elements of computer vision, graphics, and machine learning to innovate the digital landscape.
In 2002, he revolutionized the realm of virtual production with the introduction of the Light Stage 3 system, which ingeniously surrounds actors with color LEDs to project images of virtual environments, allowing for precise, lighting-accurate compositing. This groundbreaking methodology laid the groundwork for numerous advancements in the industry.
Debevec’s transformative techniques—ranging from photogrammetry and HDR imaging to image-based lighting—have left an indelible mark on iconic films such as The Matrix, Spider-Man 2, Benjamin Button, Avatar, Gravity, Oblivion, Maleficent, Furious 7, Blade Runner: 2049, Gemini Man, Free Guy, along with a multitude of cutting-edge video games.
His pioneering efforts have earned him prestigious accolades, including two Academy Awards for Scientific and Technical Achievement, the esteemed Progress Medal from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2022. Debevec serves as a Governor of the Visual Effects Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is a Fellow of the Visual Effects Society, and holds the role of Adjunct Research Professor at the University of Southern California.
