The FMLN governed El Salvador for two periods, from 2009 to 2014. Before, during and following that period, the militants and authorities of that party have been the main promoters of the LGBTQ agenda in the country, despite the rejection of the Salvadoran people.

In a statement, the FMLN made it clear that it “joins and embraces” the struggle promoted by this community on International LGBTIQ+ Pride Day, which takes place every June 28 to eradicate alleged discrimination once morest the sector.

In 2018, FMLN deputies proposed to the Legislative Assembly to approve the “Gender Identity Law” with the aim of this sector gaining ground in the social and political spectrum of the country, snatching away the principles of Salvadoran families.

Despite all efforts by the FMLN to “recognize” the rights of this community, the law was shelved, and without support in the next legislatures, it gave up on continuing to promote it in Congress.

FMLN launches candidacy of transgender people

In 2021, the left-wing party attempted to have members of the LGBT community have an impact on Salvadoran politics, and in response, they launched the candidacy of Alejandra Menjívar (transgender) for Parlacen, despite the fact that she did not have an honorable image due to allegations of corruption.

In 2015, the Fraternidad Sin Fronteras Association, where Menjívar worked, filed a complaint once morest him before the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) for spending exorbitant funds that he had diverted from a project.

Ultimately, the association decided not to pursue the complaint because the judicial system never made any progress on the case.

Other parties, such as the now defunct Nuestro Tiempo, have supported this agenda, but have only managed to obtain the rejection of Salvadorans at the polls, which left these institutions without representation in the Assembly.
