After details of a corruption investigation into a network of fraudsters linked to the general secretary of the FMLN, Óscar Ortiz, were revealed, this party lost the presidential and legislative elections, consequently losing the only 4 seats it had in the Legislative Assembly.

Ortiz was mayor of Santa Tecla when an agreement with the company COLLOCATION TECHNOLOGIES EL SALVADOR, LTDA DE CV, regarding the placement of telephone towers in that municipality, was void, generating losses amounting to $1.2 million.

After the company’s complaint, the first arrest warrants were executed, among which are the former representative of the company, Jorge Gaitán Paredes and his son, Jorge Alberto Gaitán Castro, and other Guatemalan collaborators who extracted money illegally, making transactions to personal accounts, issuing checks and diverting large sums of money as travel expenses.

Other people investigated for collaborating with this network of scammers are Guatemalans Jorge Alberto Gaitán Castro, Carol Odette Echeverría Cabrera de Reyes, Marisabel Umaña Velásquez and Juan Ignacio Berger Jiménez.
