Fluminense beat the Egyptians of Al-Ahly (2-0) this Monday to qualify for the Club World Cup final.
The Brazilian club Fluminense, which entered the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, will play for the title following its controlled 2-0 victory once morest the Egyptians Al-Ahly, this Monday in Jeddah. The South American champion, long held in check, made the difference thanks to goals from Jhon Arias from the penalty spot (70th) and John Kennedy (90th).
The other semi-final will pit the big favorite, Manchester City, once morest the Japanese Urawa Red Diamonds on Tuesday. The English club, directly qualified for the last four, is aiming for a quintuple this year following the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the European Super Cup.
Europe at the top since 2012
Fluminense will try to put an end to European hegemony in this competition. No European champion club has missed the trophy since 2012, when Chelsea were beaten by Brazilian Corinthians.
The first semi-final was marked on Monday by a clear opposition of styles in which each of the two teams had their highlights. Fluminense produced some play, creating the best chances of the game, via an unfortunate Jhon Arias with two strikes on the post: first on an almost perfect volley (9th), then on a shot receiving a corner from Ganso cleverly put back (25th). The Egyptians of Al-Ahly had opted for a counter game, and it was they who lit the first fuse with a powerful strike from Percy Tau deflected for a corner, while Fabio was beaten (6th).
In the 28th minute, Elshahat went on the counter and forced the Brazilian defense into a miraculous save from a corner, while Kahraba at close range forced veteran Fabio (43) to make a reflex save (36th).
German Cano, the top scorer of “Flu”, was hardly successful, seeing his slightly crossed shot pass in front of the Al-Ahly defense (51st). This alert had the gift of waking up Marcel Kohler’s men because in the process, Elshahat, once once more going on the counterattack, saw his shot at the end of the race captured by Fabio. Then the Carioca club goalkeeper had to make a difficult save (62nd) on the shot from the same Elshahat. The balance of power ended up turning in favor of the men of Pedro Diniz, also coach of Brazil, who took the advantage on a penalty obtained by Marcelo, the former defender of Real Madrid, and transformed by the twirling Arias (70th ).
The Egyptians rushed towards Fabio’s goal, Tau (72nd) and El Maaloul (78th) being very close to equalizing. But they ended up paying for this excess of energy. And John Kennedy, barely coming on, killed all the suspense by doubling the lead with a tight shot at ground level (90th).
