Fluctuating Poultry Prices and the Impact on the Moroccan Market: A Comprehensive Analysis

Poultry prices fluctuated and those of chicken fell to less than 9 dirhams per live kilogram at the farm, thus continuing their downward curve observed in recent days. Indeed, they had dropped considerably at retail in the markets, the price per kilogram having not exceeded 15 dirhams in a certain number of shops.

Also, for those who are witnessing a relative drop in the prices of poultry and particularly those of chicken, it is not to displease, especially since the effect of increasing demand for white meat on the Moroccan market is very real. . In recent days, chicken prices have fallen in various Moroccan cities, following the wave of high prices that hit the month of Ramadan, sometimes reaching the fateful bar of 30 dirhams per kilogram.

Professional sources underlined, in this context, that it was due to the fall in the price of fodder, which had risen considerably in recent months, particularly before Ramadan, which had led to a doubling of the selling price of chicken on this religious occasion.

Indeed, the poultry sector had been little spared by the rise in the prices of agricultural raw materials, the cost of transport and the drop in production, which had forced many breeders to stop their activities.

The same sources also indicated that since Eid al-Adha, and greater consumption of red meat in Morocco, the demand for chicken has decreased. Also, we expect the decline to continue in the coming days despite the fact that the summer season is ideal for increased poultry consumption (holiday celebrations, weddings and others, etc.). However, we must remain attentive because peaks in the rise may arise along the way.

The relationship between consumers and professionals in the sector has become very strained lately in the context of the global economic crisis. The higher the food and agricultural prices are on the national market, the more the criticisms of this increase are perceived as a blow to the purchasing power of the citizen.

The professional players in this sector cling to their position on the subject, arguing that the high price is due to uncontrollable external factors, stressing that the government intervenes to support professionals in order to adjust prices as well as possible and to the consumer and for the profession.

Mustapha Mountassir, president of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers (APV), told Hespress that “chicken is sold for less than 9 dirhams in agricultural fields, which has caused a drop in its prices at the national level. “. Mountassir added that “the downward curve started weeks ago due to the drop in demand”, arguing that “the purchasing power of citizens has seriously deteriorated”. The professional drew attention to the fact that “the expenses of Eid al-Adha have aggravated it a little more, which has exhausted the savings of Moroccan families who are no longer able to buy all the consumer products of the summer”.

Mountassir explained that: “Agricultural estates are currently producing only 30% of their production capacity due to the price situation, especially since professionals have suffered continuous financial losses since Eid al-Adha”. And the president of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers added that “prices should rise once more following regarding a month if they continue in this case, as they should reach 25 dirhams per kilogram in national markets”.

Mustapha Mountassir, told Hespress during a previous meeting that “things improved a lot following the end of Ramadan, because production increased on the farms. This had the effect of driving prices down.” “Prices will remain stable throughout the next month. Plus, they will decrease further with lower feed prices,” he confirmed.

With regard to Morocco’s poultry dynamics, it should be noted that it has been clearly consolidated with its 46 compound feed manufacturing plants, its 56 hatchery units, its 3 laying-type chick hatcheries and 4 poults. We will not overlook the 30 approved poultry slaughterhouses under construction, the 25 consumption egg packaging units, the 4 consumption egg processing units as well as the 46 poultry meat cutting units and 43 preparation units mechanically separated meats.
