It kills every year, yet a vaccine exists: the flu is back in Polynesia. An infection that is found in waves, mainly at the end and beginning of the year, then during the cooler season.
The last epidemic dates back to the 1st quarter of 2023. Even if more than 22,000 doses have been administered: the target population is estimated at more than double, even triple. In 2023, 184 people were hospitalized, and 8 victims were reported.
“The previous year, we had 11 deathsrecalls Dr Henri-Pierre Mallet, head of the health monitoring and observation office at the Health and Social Action Regulatory Agency (ARASS). Whether it is for the flu or the covid, these are unvaccinated people who we will find in serious condition, so it is perfectly normal to be vaccinated, we must not wait. We try to avoid ending up with hospitalizations and deaths that can be avoided » .
The new vaccination campaign was launched at the end of October. It mainly targets the most fragile or at-risk people, but is open to the rest of the population. Getting vaccinated is also a barrier gesture.
« You can get vaccinated at your pharmacist. For covid, you have to make an appointment because it is only done in multidoses, continues Dr Mallet. We can do this free vaccination for all the people we target (see list below) » .
Although few cases have been identified at the moment, two people are still hospitalized. Don’t wait for the peak to protect yourself and help avoid emergency room congestion, knowing that a resumption of covid has also been observed in recent weeks.
