Flu Season in Lower Austria: Symptoms, Statistics, and Prevention Tips

2024-01-16 10:05:00

Symptoms such as dry cough, fever, sore throat and fatigue are currently plaguing a large part of the population. The result is a lot of sickness reports. In total, 42,964 Lower Austrians who are insured with the ÖGK or receive unemployment benefit were on sick leave in the previous week. Across Austria there were even 229,864 people.

In Lower Austria, most people are lying flat because of flu-like infections. A total of 9,511 people reported sick as a result. Because of Corona, 3,541 Lower Austrians are staying in bed. 342 people cited the “real flu”, i.e. influenza, as the reason for being sick.

The number of sick leaves is slightly lower across Austria than at the same time last year. In Lower Austria, too, fewer people reported sick in the second calendar week compared to 2023 (48,613). Nevertheless, caution is advised in order to contain further infections and spreads.

“Getting a flu vaccination from your family doctor would certainly be the right decision, especially since the majority of circulating viruses, namely influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses, correspond to the virus strains contained in influenza vaccinations,” recommends ÖGK chief physician Andreas Herbs. The vaccination is particularly effective for risk groups and older people, and people should also wash or disinfect their hands regularly, keep their distance and wear a mask, adds Krauter.
