The flu and gastro viruses were on full display during Christmas week.

The last week of December was marked by a “sharp increase in indicators (of the flu epidemic) in France, particularly in hospitals”summarized Public Health France in a weekly report.

10 regions are now in the epidemic phase, including Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Centre-Val-de-Loire which joined the list between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

From now on, Brittany and Pays de la Loire are two of the three regions not yet fully affected by the flu epidemic. However, they should quickly follow, being already classified in the pre-epidemic phase.

Decline in Covid and bronchiolitis

Covid-19, the last major winter epidemic to be monitored weekly, also continues to record a significant wave of contaminations, but this has been declining for several weeks.

As the flu spreads, the public health agency, however, confirms a decline in the bronchiolitis epidemicwhich mainly affects babies.

“Uses to the emergency room and hospitalizations after visits to the emergency room for bronchiolitis in children under 2 years old were decreasing for the fourth consecutive week while remaining at a high level”summarizes Public Health France.

A first region is no longer considered an epidemic area: Brittany, which is entering the “post-epidemic” phase.

Numerous poisonings in New Aquitaine

Cases of gastro are also increasing, particularly in New Aquitaine where they literally exploded last week. The number of food poisoning cases also increased sharply after Christmas in the region.
