The flu epidemic continues to progress throughout the country. Eleven regions of France are still in the “epidemic phase”, according to Public Health France. On the other hand, the trend is downward for bronchiolitis and Covid-19.

The flu continues to spread throughout France. According to the weekly bulletin from Public Health France dated this Wednesday, January 17, “the circulation of influenza viruses continues in France”. According to the health agency, medical procedures by SOS Médecins increased by almost 2% during the second week of January (January 8 to 14), compared to the first days of 2023.

Eleven regions of France remain in the epidemic phase, the highest alert level: Pays de la Loire, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Grand Est, Centre-Val de Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica. Only Normandy and Brittany are still classified in the “pre-epidemic phase”.

“Activity in community medicine is increasing”, note Public Health France. On the other hand, at the hospital, the numbers are falling. Last week, 4,669 people went to the emergency room for flu-like illness, compared to 5,889 seven days earlier. However, “emergency room indicators are increasing among 0-4 year olds”the only age group in this case, warns the health agency. “This increase observed among young children at the start of the school year might be observed in other age groups in the weeks to come.”

Besides the flu, other winter viruses are following a downward trend. Starting with bronchiolitis. If the epidemic remains present in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Corsica, Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, four other regions have just moved into the “post-epidemic” phase: Hauts-de-France, the Grand Est, New Aquitaine and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. At the national level, all indicators are declining.

The same is true for Covid-19. “Syndromic indicators continue to decline in town and in hospital in all age groups, as do positivity rates”writes Public Health France. “In wastewater, the detection of the virus continues to decrease this week.” Good news, while the recent vaccination campaign once morest Covid-19 is slipping: only 29.4% of people aged 65 and over have been vaccinated since this fall.
