Flu and Epidemic Surveillance in Martinique: Public Health France Report

The weekly epidemiological surveillance bulletin from Public Health France (SpF), dated December 8, 2023, reveals a slight increase in flu indicators in Martinique. Between November 27 and December 3, 230 clinically suggestive cases and 4 visits to the emergency room were recorded.

According to the latest figures communicated by Public Health France, a “slight increase in flu indicators” was observed between November 27 and December 3 in Martinique.

Over this period, 230 clinically suggestive cases were recorded on the island, compared to 200 the previous week.

Since October, we have observed an increase in the number of consultations in community medicine for influenza-like illness with an average of 300 weekly visits between S2023-40. [ndlr: du 2 au 8 octobre 2023] and S2023-48 [ndlr: du 27 novembre au 3 décembre 2023] compared to an average of 85 visits between August and September. This increase is also observed for SOS Médecins visits.

Although the number of visits to the emergency room has increased, the number of hospitalizations following visits to the emergency room remains zero.

In addition, although the numbers are low, the number of emergency visits increased in S2023-48 with 4 visits, versus one visit per week between weeks 2023-45 and 2023-47. One hospitalization following passage was reported in S2023-41 [ndlr : entre le 9 et le 15 octobre].

Finally, Public Health specifies that the positivity rate of hospital samples is 3%. Between November 20 and 26, “2 type A viruses out of 58 samples were reported”specifies the bulletin.

Although bronchiolitis indicators are stabilizing in the territory, health authorities point out that “the epidemic still ongoing”.

Between November 27 and December 3, 10 visits to the pediatric emergency room and 3 hospitalizations following visits to the emergency room were recorded.

The indicators of SARS-CoV-2 remain, “generally stable and at a low level“, adds Public Health France.
