The floral artists were still busy Friday morning to put the finishing touches to their installation. Twenty-three representatives of the fine flower of Belgian and international florists were given carte blanche to decorate 15 rooms of the Hôtel de Ville on the theme of surrealism, in homage to René Magritte, whose 125th birthday will be celebrated this year.

The walk begins with the work of Riana Setyanigrum, Wendy Kartini Mandik and Sigit Paripurno. The Indonesian team imagined a shimmering bird of paradise, wrapped in braided leaves according to the art of janur.

The stairwell then leads onlookers and visitors to the rooms, under a rain of flowers escaping from metal watering cans orchestrated by Leïla Floral. In the large clearance sits a monumental thistle made of paper by Mio Gallery. The master florist Max Hurtaud decorates the office of the aldermen. His work “L’Envolée” is inspired by the monarch butterflies of Mexico and echoes the painting “La Place au Soleil” by the painter in the bowler hat.

In the municipal council hall, the thousands of flowers arranged by the floral goldsmiths Maria Sofia Tavares and Marc Noël reflect the majesty of the place, while Damien Overputte and Ness Klorofyl have combined their worlds (luxury for one, ecology for other) to imagine a Maximilian room under a Magrittian rain. As for the mayor’s office, designed by Nele Ost, it is overflowing with paperwork, flowers and documents piling up in the four corners of the room.

Flowertime is held every two years, alternating with the Grand-Place Flower Carpet. It takes place this year from August 11 to 15. Entrance tickets can be purchased in advance or on site, and combined with a visit to the Town Hall tower. Alongside the festival, the free “Brussels in bloom” trail sprinkles colorful petals across the heart of the capital.

In 2019, during the last pre-Covid edition of Flowertime, 20,000 people wandered through the halls of the Hôtel de Ville. “Flowertime is positioning Brussels on the summer tourist agenda”, both in Belgium and beyond our borders, rejoices the Alderman of Economic Affairs for the City of Brussels, Fabian Maingain. The event, coupled with “Brussels in Flowers”, contributes to highlighting the capital by taking the curious through the city center so that they can discover the catering establishments and shops.
