Florida will have a new airport 90 miles from Miami

The new airport being built in South Florida, 90 miles from Miami, promises to revolutionize transportation in the state.

In response to the growing demand for flights and the saturation of the airports in Miami and Orlando, a new airport will be built in South Florida, the Airglades International Airport. This will be located in Hendry County, just 90 miles west of Miami.

This ambitious project, with an estimated investment of 300 million dollars, is positioned as a modern and efficient alternative to meet the increase in air traffic in the region.

Location of the new airport

The airport will be located in a predominantly agricultural area near Clewiston, about five miles from the city. And its construction has generated high expectations among local residents and community leaders.

According to county schools superintendent Michael Swindle, the project is estimated to create more than 1,400 skilled jobs, which will be a significant boost to the local economy.

Airport Manager Lillie B. Rentz noted that while the region has historically been known for its agribusiness, the arrival of Airglades International Airport will open the door to new industries such as manufacturing, distribution, retail and logistics, thereby diversifying the county’s economic opportunities.

The project is still awaiting final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Once approved, the current general aviation airport will be transformed into a state-of-the-art logistics hub, equipped with runways and spaces prepared to handle large-scale operations.

In addition to the economic impact, the construction of the new airport will also address social and educational challenges in the region.

With a growing Spanish-speaking population and a strong demand for skilled workers, local businesses, such as US Sugar, have already begun recruiting students seeking industry certifications, reflecting the urgent need to improve job opportunities and quality of life in the county.

$400 million investment in Miami Airport

Meanwhile, at Miami International Airport (MIA), a $400 million investment has been approved to build a state-of-the-art air cargo hub.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced that the hub is the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It will increase the airport’s cargo capacity by at least 50%, projecting it as a global leader in the air cargo industry.

Construction of this facility, which will span nearly 800,000 square feet on 11 acres of airport land, is expected to be completed in 2029, generating 8,500 temporary jobs and 2,500 permanent jobs.

In addition, the project will include sustainable and environmentally friendly features, with LEED Silver Certification, underlining MIA’s commitment to sustainable development.

Already the largest airport in the United States for international cargo and a key economic driver for the state of Florida, Miami International Airport continues to expand its capacity to remain at the forefront of global air transportation.

With the addition of this new cargo hub, MIA is on track to establish itself as a key pillar in the global economy.
