MIAMI.- The agency of turismo of Florida, Visit Florida, estimates that the state had 37.9 million visitors during the first quarter of 2023.
In this way, tourism in Florida increased by 6.7% compared to the same period the previous year, although it has not yet been possible to reach the number of foreign visitors that it had before the coronavirus pandemic.
First-quarter estimates “show that 2023 is on track to continue Florida’s outstanding performance,” Visit Florida President and CEO Dana Young said in the statement.
In fact, the vast majority of visitors come from other states in the country and represent more than 91% of the figures for the first quarter.
The rest, 9%, or 1.8 million visitors, come from abroad.
The Florida Congress agreed to provide $80 million to the state tourism agency, $30 more than last year, to promote cities, beaches and nature in general.
Official data shows that Disney World, on the outskirts of Orlando, is the most visited place in Florida, followed by Miami and Miami Beach, the Keys and St. Augustine.
In the case of Disney, the disagreements between Governor Ron DeSantis and the entertainment company do not seem to have alienated visitors. By contrast, the firm reports a substantial 17% increase in profits.
Meanwhile, the nation’s oldest Latino civil rights organization criticizes Florida’s recently adopted law on the removal of irregular immigrants and issued a travel advisory asking Hispanic tourists not to travel to the state.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the warning during the appearance of LULAC President Domingo Garcia, who opined that the new Florida law “is dangerous and might pose a threat to freedom.”
