STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 25 Florida State men’s tennis team lost its first match of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, falling to Arizona State 4-3. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc defeated the 10th-ranked player in the country for his fourth victory and third ranked win of the season.
The doubles round was a familiar tight affair as Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif defeated their opposition 6-3 for their third doubles win of the season.
The two remaining matches were both deadlocked at 6-6 but the Seminoles dropped both as Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane fell in a 10-8 tiebreaker while Alex Bulte and Azariah Rusher dropped an 8-6 tiebreaker.
Bulte made a statement in the first singles match as he dominated, dropping only one game and sweeping the second set. Pourroy lost the first set 6-3 before the straight sets defeat.
Rihane pulled off another impressive victory as he rolled the first set 6-4 before fighting off a tough second set tiebreaker at 7-4 to take his fourth singles win of the season. Connel took the first set before dropping the remaining two.
Cornut-Chauvinc rattled off another ranked win with a victory over 10th-ranked Murphy Cassone in three sets. Cornut-Chauvinc won the first set 6-2 before facing a 7-5 second set defeat. Just as he done all season when the odds were pressed, he excelled with a 6-4 third set for a third top-40 victory this season.
Dous-Karpenschif lost a heartbreaking 8-6 first set tiebreaker before pushing back with a 6-4 second set victory. He dropped the final set 6-4 with the last available point up for grabs.
Florida State is now 3-2 and faces 12th-ranked Mississippi State on Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.
