Lane Morgan Caviness, 48, a federal agent armed with an AR-15 rifle and apparently intoxicated, was shot dead Wednesday by the Monroe County Police in Key Largo.south Florida, during an altercation, according to reports from the authorities.
Monroe Sheriff Rick Ramsay said that detectives and patrol responded and found Caviness to be intoxicated. Caviness walked out onto a balcony armed with a gun and dropped it when ordered to do so, deputies said.
Everything indicates that the authorities responded to a call to the emergency number 911, made by a woman from Key Largo Ocean Resort.
“Caviness went out on a balcony (…) with a gun and dropped it when ordered to do so”, the bailiff pointed out, warning that he was “ready for battle!”
“A few minutes later, Caviness came out on the balcony once more, but this time he was armed with an AR-15 (rifle).Ramsey said.
The bailiff noted that at that time lhe police officers had “no other choice but to attack him,” and added: “Four of my officers, detectives and assistants shot him with their firearms.”
Witnesses said they heard someone yell, “You’re going to kill me! You’re going to kill me!” and then heard four shots.
Ramsay said deputies set up turnstiles at Caviness and called Fire personnel, who pronounced him dead at the scene.
The sheriff commented that, “as is always done in such cases,” he has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to conduct an independent investigation into this event.
