Florida meeting could improve relations between Trump and Netanyahu

After touring Washington, Netanyahu heads south. At Trump’s estate Mar-a-Lago, he will meet the Republican presidential candidate.

On Thursday, the Israeli Prime Minister met both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Netanyahu changed plans for the US visit to make time to meet Trump. It may be because the latter is well supported in several opinion polls, especially in the swing states.

The pressure

Netanyahu has been pressed by both Harris and Trump about the war in Gaza. The Democrats’ presumptive presidential candidate has made it clear that she will not go quietly.

– I clearly conveyed my serious concern for the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, Harris said after his meeting with Trump.

That same day, Trump, in an interview with Fox News, called for Netanyahu to quickly end the war.

– I want him to finish, and quickly. They are devastated with the publicity they are getting now, Trump said.

Cheers in Congress

When Netanyahu spoke to Congress, Republicans cheered as the prime minister defended Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip. It has killed more than 39,000 civilians, according to Palestinian health officials.

There was a chilly atmosphere between Netanyahu and Trump when the prime minister congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the 2020 election. The temperature dropped even more when Trump criticized Netanyahu for security failures during Hamas’ attacks and terrorist actions on October 7.

According to Reuters, the meeting at Mar-a-Lago indicates that both Trump and Netanyahu may now have a desire to improve their relationship.
