Florida man mistakes an alligator for a dog on a long leash and ends up maimed

The man believed that the animal was an innocent dog.

Authorities reported that a man lost a piece of his leg following being bitten by an alligator outside a Florida motel following he mistook the reptile for a dog.

The man was attacked by the alligator while walking alone at the Warm Mineral Springs motel in North Port around 12:30 am on Tuesday.

Citing the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, WFLA reported that Subject noticed a dark figure crawling through some bushes. But he thought it was a dog on a long leash, so he didn’t move away when the alligator charged at him.

“He said the figure looked like a dog on a long leash,” a spokesperson for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, later the reptile bit the man’s right leg, ripping away a large portion of their muscle tissue.

An officer who was in the area responding to another situation was able to assist the man.

The subject was taken by paramedics to a hospital. from the area to receive treatment for his injuries.

The animal was captured by another officer before an expert hunter arrived at the scene to remove the reptile from the area.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told NBC News that 7-foot-1 alligator was flown alive to Townsend Farms and that the man “was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.”
