Florida man fights bear at home to protect his dogs

A man from Daytona Beach (Florida) was beaten by a bear that entered his house and was going to attack his three dogs, as seen in a video posted on social networks in which the animal’s growls can be heard. during the fight.

This is the second incident in the state in less than a week, according to the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Walter Hickox, who was slightly injured, lunged at the bear to remove it from the porch of his house and, when he did, he smashed through a chair in the doorway to prevent it from entering once more.

“My God! I was attacked by a bear,” Walter is heard shouting following the incident that occurred last Wednesday.

“Not much was going through my head at the time other than what will happen if he walks past me and into the house where the rest of my dogs and my wife were,” Hickox told WFTV.

In mid-January, a black bear attacked and injured a woman who was walking her dog in the town of DeBary, on the northeast coast of Florida.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries, with scratches on her face, hands and back, was able to call the 911 emergency line and report the event, in which her dog was not injured.

The animal was later killed by FWC officials who found it with its young near the scene of the attack.

A witness said that “the bear was not afraid of humans”.

The “significant” growth of the population of black bears in Florida, which reached an estimated 4,350 in 2015, from 300 to 500 in 1970, and the incidents with people, led the FWC to implement a controversial hunting program of black bears in 2016 that lasted two days and in which 295 specimens were killed.
