It will have escaped no one’s notice, the rather comical situations in which the inhabitants of Leonida find themselves, the fictional state which will serve as a playground in GTA VI, are inspired by real videos made in Florida. Between two curious alligators and a twerk on the roof of a car, one of the people parodied by Rockstar Games is looking to get a little moula on their back. Lawrence Sullivan, aka the Joker from Florida, is demanding two million dollars from American studios for parodying him in the trailer for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto.
The Joker from Florida has created a little notoriety thanks to TikTok, and he takes the opportunity to threaten Rockstar Games who allegedly “stole his appearance, his life”. The studio should therefore “a million or two” as compensation. Lawrence Sullivan became famous in Florida in 2017 and for all the wrong reasons beyond his resemblance to Batman’s worst enemy: he was arrested for pointing a gun on a traffic lane. Not really worthy of the Clown Prince of Crime, even if he had been locked up once more a year later for having… violated the terms of his first conviction.
This is not the first time that Rockstar Games has been threatened with legal action for being inspired by a person. In 2014, the studio was directly attacked by actress Lindsay Lohan who criticized them for its resemblance to the character of Lacey Jonas in GTA V. Rockstar won the case thanks to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which governs freedom of expression including the right to parody. Sorry Joker, another loss for you in Rockstar City.
