Florida: Governor DeSantis slows down Disney

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed into law a bill that would abolish the self-government exercised by the entertainment company on Disney properties.

State administration

The new law will subject Disney to various levels of state oversight in Florida, including through a board of directors that DeSantis has named Tampa attorney Martin Garcia to chair.

The right-wing Conservative DeSantis said Disney had waivers and had great tax advantages as a result. Since the 1960s, Disney has had privileges “that no corporation or individual in the state of Florida has ever enjoyed,” he said.

Disney and DeSantis at odds over education policy

The company had publicly opposed an educational policy in force in Florida that, among other things, prohibits references to same-sex relationships up to the third grade.

DeSantis is considered within the Republican Party as a possible candidate for the US presidential office.
