Florida continues its pro-life policies and wants to defund abortion clinics

Some US territories are trying to curb abortion practices, which were, in some cases, highly liberalized. Since the country’s Supreme Court ended in 2022 with a ruling that constitutionally guaranteed the “right” to abortion – the famous Roe v. Wade case -, there are many territories that implement pro-life practices.

In Florida, controlled by the Republican Party, the limit for abortion has already been reduced from 24 to 15 weeksin addition to establishing a series of requirements to do so and harsh penalties for those doctors and clinics that break the rules.

But now it has been the attorney general, Ashley Moody, who has asked the Justice to reapply a law that prohibits allocating state funds to institutions that perform abortions. In this way, Moody requested that the order of a Tallahassee court blocking the application of a law that sought to cut off the economic flow to these types of centers be annulled.

The prosecutor alluded directly to the case of Roe v. Wade to argue that the blocking of that law does not make any sense. “We are asking the court to vacate the injunction and allow the will of our state’s legislature and the people who elected them to take effect,” Moody said in a statement.

Increase in abortions

Despite government efforts, abortion cases do not stop increasing in the southern state. In 2022, 82,199 interventions of this type were performed compared to 79,800 the previous year, a figure that, according to what they point out, might be the result of a “call effect” of women who want to abort from other states and other countries.

Specifically, the more restrictive policies of Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana or Alabama cause this flight to Florida where, despite the fact that it has hardened, it continues to be more lax than in many of these neighboring states.

In Florida there are 55 abortion clinics authorized companies that receive public money. As there is no public healthcare, women who want to undergo these practices must go to one of these specialized centers.

In Spain, the health services of the different autonomies are the ones that perform these abortions. However, abortion clinics are also indirectly financed from the State. And it is that, as reported by El Debate, the Government of Pedro Sánchez awarded contracts and credits to various abortion clinics owned by Guillermo Sánchez de Andrés, owner of Dator, the main abortion center in Spain.
