They busted out decades ago. Since then, around 40 monkeys have lived in a forest and the adjacent parking lot – in the middle of Florida, right next to a major airport. And seem to feel comfortable there, as can be seen in the video.

Runaway monkeys settled in Florida forest

The home of the southern green monkeys is actually East and South Africa. In the 1940s, they escaped from a breeding station and settled in the forest of southern Florida. The primates have long since gotten used to people, cars and aircraft noise.

Authorities fear the monkeys will threaten the local ecosystem if they continue to breed. Animal rights activists are calling for a sanctuary for the animals. So that they can continue to live safely in their home country of Florida for the next few decades. (bst)
