Florida: abortion could be reduced to 6 weeks, except in cases of rape or incest

On the first day of the Florida legislative session, members of the Republican majority introduced a bill prohibiting abortion beyond 6 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape or incest, but without explicitly exclude danger to the pregnant person. This law might pass because Governor Ron DeSantis has already spoken out in the past in favor of a six-week limit, and he has this time indicated that he welcomes the initiatives pro-life (without however specifying that he supported the bill as it is).

After the abolition last year of the federal law on abortion, Florida had already reduced to 15 weeks the possible period for this practice (without exceptions for rape and incest beyond this period). As other southern states have a shorter delay, the number of women coming from another state to have an abortion in Florida increased by 38% in 2022 compared to the previous year (1).

Ron DeSantis’ second term swearing-in

Supporters of abortion have demonstrated once morest this project, all the way to the White House where Karine Jean-Pierre, press officer for the presidency, indicated that this law “ would like to ban abortion before many women are informed of their pregnancy (…) Politicians like Governor DeSantis espouse “freedom for all”, while directly attacking the freedom to make one’s own health care decisions.»

Recall that Governor DeSantis is positioning himself as a leading figure for the Republican Primary of 2024 (even if he is outdistanced by Trump in the polls) to then run once morest the current President of the United States.
