Florence, the smashing of cars in Piazza Vittorio Veneto doesn’t stop: three more cases

Florence‘s Window-Shattering Chronicles: A Comic Tragedy

In a city renowned for its art, history, and aesthetics, you’d think street vandalism would be at the bottom of the to-do list. Yet here we are, in Florence, where the latest craze isn’t a renaissance painting but rather the smashing of car windows! I mean, who knew that “smashing” could replace “gathering” as the favorite social activity in Piazza Vittorio Veneto?

The Facebook page Spaccate Piazza Vittorio Veneto documents the episodes every day

Oh, and here’s the cherry on top: there’s a Facebook page dedicated to these car carnage chronicles. “Spaccate Piazza Vittorio Veneto” (or “Smashed Piazza Vittorio Veneto” for the non-Italian speakers among us—don’t worry, I’m here to help!) was born after an avalanche of personal testimonies. That sound you hear? It’s the collective gasp of car owners everywhere. They must’ve thought, “You know what would really enhance my visit to Florence? A smashing experience!”

Since its inception in September, this page has been documenting the daily heartache of car owners left with shattered dreams and glass-strewn realities. Just yesterday, I tell you, at least five cars were found with their windows creatively redesigned. If this were an art gallery, I can see it now: “Smashism: The Modern Approach to Car Aesthetics.”

But wait, there’s more! This morning, two other unfortunate vehicles in the same area joined the ranks of the “disemboweled” automotive brigade. You have to wonder, do these owners just have bad luck or are they secretly contestants on Italy’s version of “Wreck It or Try”? One thing’s for certain, the cars are winning the smash-up derby here.

As if that weren’t enough, one poor soul had the audacity to return to the square after leaving their vehicle there. According to a post at 3 PM on the page: “He just found it in this condition with various things removed from the inside.” Now, I don’t know what’s worse—coming back to a smashed window or realizing your car has turned into a glorified piñata.

Just imagine the scene—a man, a car, and a look of dismay that would rival the Mona Lisa’s smile. What was meant to be a perfect day out becomes an episode of “Florence Undercover: The Great Window Heist.”

Yes, the saga continues as they write in various shades of despair, documenting each shattered car like they’re ticking off items on a bucket list of vandalism. You have to admire the dedication! It’s a bit like watching a car crash, you can’t help but slow down and see it unfold—except this one involves broken glass and a lot of sighs.
