Floral capital of Europe – Yucatan Diary

BRUSSELS (EFE).— The city yesterday inaugurated the floral carpet that adorns its emblematic “Grand Place” every two years and which in this edition was created by Belgian artist Océane Cornille and is dedicated to “Art Nouveau.”

Brussels is expecting thousands of visitors by Sunday to admire a carpet made up of some 105,000 flowers, making it a unique tapestry in the world.

The last edition of this event, held in 2022, attracted around 150,000 people, according to organizers.

This year’s event, which is celebrating its 23rd edition, aims to pay tribute to Brussels as the floral capital of Europe and also seeks to highlight the city as an artistic reference and the birthplace of surrealism.

“For me, creating this design is a really nice opportunity. It is very interesting to be able to work with plants in urban spaces,” said Océane Cornille, the artist who designed this edition, in an interview with EFE. She studied at the Ecole Supérieure de l’Art de Liège and specialised in street art.

The dahlias, all grown and harvested in Belgium, began to arrive early in the morning.

Volunteers worked from 7 a.m. to build the drawing, which measures 70 meters long by 24 meters wide.

“I wanted to show the diversity of this city, where every neighbourhood has its own cultural, linguistic and historical identity, and forms this crazy city,” says Océane, who has previously worked painting murals on walls in different parts of Belgium.

The artist’s goal in this edition was to break with the classic design of previous editions and create a piece more focused on street art.

“This year’s work consists of an accumulation of vegetal and organic elements that roam freely in the tapestry and create this movement of displacement that we find naturally in the inhabitants of the city,” reflects the artist.

The assembly process has two phases: first, a sketch of the design is printed and placed on the ground, with numbers written on it, each of which corresponds to a type of flower. Secondly, volunteers can easily fill in each area and create the complete drawing.

Around 130 people are involved in placing the flowers, mainly dahlias, according to the organisation.
