Floods in Pakistan’s Kohistan Valley; 50 houses were washed away

ISLAMABAD: Floods caused by heavy rains caused massive damage in Kandiya Tehsil of Upper Kohistan Valley in Pakistan on Sunday. Dawn reports that at least 50 houses and mini power stations were washed away.

Revenue Officer Mohammad Riaz said five teams have been sent to the affected areas for relief work and loss assessment. But local residents say that 100 houses were washed away. Two villages were affected by the flood. Many people became homeless. No casualties were reported.

The water supply systems of four villages namely Dansh, Berti, Jashoi and Dangoi were damaged. Evacuation of the villagers before the flood occurred prevented a major disaster. Houses in Jashoi area were completely submerged. The affected families have been shifted to safer places.

Authorities have provided 45 tents and other essential items to the affected families. Riaz said a team of revenue officials would reach the affected areas to start relief operations.

Heavy machinery of the Dassu hydropower project was damaged in the flood but there was no major loss. Officials say food items have been sent to affected families in Kandia, tents are being set up in Jashoi and more are on their way to Birthwi.

Kandiya tehsil had suffered huge damage in floods in 2010, 2011 and 2016. After this there was no reconstruction of the valley.
