Floods in Libya: “most” deaths could have been avoided, says UN

Most of the thousands of deaths in the floods in eastern Libya “might have been avoided”, said Thursday the head of the World Meteorological Organization, which depends on the UN. However, access to the disaster area remains very difficult following the destruction of roads and bridges, as well as the damage caused to power and telephone lines cut in large areas, where at least 30,000 people were left homeless.

Tunisia has banned a delegation from the European Parliament from entering its territory, provoking strong reactions from MEPs, some of whom have called for the suspension of the migration agreement concluded between the EU and Tunis.

The United Nations special envoy to Sudan has resigned. Declared persona non grata by General Burhan’s junta, he might no longer go there. Highly criticized by Sudanese civilians for his inability to foresee the imminence of a conflict, he delivered a final speech to the United Nations Security Council.
