Montevideo.-A total of 3,034 people remain displaced from their homes in Uruguay due to the floods that affect various areas of the country, according to the latest official report released this Sunday.
According to the situation report presented by the National Emergency System (Sinae), in nine of the 19 departments (provinces) of the country, a total of 598 people were evacuated from their homes and 2,436 were self-evacuated.
According to the document, although compared to Saturday’s report the number of evacuated people increased “minimally”, which went from 543 to 598, the total number of self-evacuated people decreased, marking a drop in the number of displaced people, which had totaled 4,209 in that day.
Of the total affected, 998 are in the Paysandú department, 715 correspond to Treinta y Tres, 530 to Salto, 457 to Durazno, 129 to Cerro Largo, 95 to Artigas, 44 to Tacuarembó, 40 to Rocha and 26 to Soriano.
The flooding of the Uruguay River, a product of intense rains in southern Brazil, led to an increase in the number of people displaced from their homes in Salto, on the Uruguayan coast.
“Since yesterday, the return operation has been underway in Treinta y Tres. So far it is being fulfilled according to current protocols and without problems. The number of displaced people decreased in that department and also in Tacuarembó,” the report details.
On the other hand, due to river flooding and the impact of rain, six national routes that run through a total of four departments are closed.
The state-run National Administration of Electricity Power Plants and Transmissions (UTE), meanwhile, implements bonuses for customers of the affected departments that include discounts and extension of the due date for energy bills.
According to Sinae, this Sunday the national director of emergencies, Santiago Caramés, traveled to the department of Salto, where he toured the affected areas together with the coordinator of the local Departmental Emergency Coordination Center (Cecoed), Josué Lima, and visited two evacuation centers.
The System also reiterated in its report its list of recommendations regarding the risk of flooding, which includes the request to “not attempt to cross flooded roads, causeways or bridges even if the location is known” and to “place goods and valuable objects in the highest places in the home”, among others.Infobae.
