Floods 2024: We help in affected areas

THE ROADMAN

“Just like in previous floods, after the water recedes, we will use financial donations to help, above all, with the restoration of houses and apartments of the most vulnerable who cannot help themselves,” says the head of the flood team, Marek Štys, adding that the level of aid provided will mainly depend on how much will be selected in a public collection.‎

“The floods are still ongoing and the rivers are just starting to recede. We are in the very first phase, people are in shock. It is necessary to clear the houses, to dry them as much as possible before the arrival of winter. Soldiers are going to the area, they will help with the cleanup. For some, crisis psychological intervention will be essential. There is a lack of drinking water somewhere. In some places the electricity is not working and there is no signal, that is the first thing now. Massive material aid will be needed and money for the reconstruction of households will be essential,” adds Adriana Černá, our media coordinator, regarding the current situation in Jesenice.

We are connected with the integrated rescue system, regional and municipal fire brigades and coordinate with other humanitarian organizations. We continuously adapt the help to the needs and the current situation. We have many years of experience with flood programs in 1997, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2013, as well as with operations after the devastating tornado in Moravia in 2021.

Current information about our flood assistance

As usual we help in natural disasters

  • In the first weeks, we provide immediate material assistance to affected households through municipalities and crisis teams.
  • After the water recedes, we map the needs in the affected regions, visit individual households, and focus on helping particularly vulnerable groups of the population, such as people without relatives, without savings, seniors or single parents.
  • We provide affected people with psychosocial support, we advise them on handling the necessary administration, but also on home repairs. We operate on site even years after the disaster, until the residents of the flooded areas come to terms with the consequences of the disaster.
  • In the long term, we also focus on disaster prevention, spatial planning, anti-flood measures, increasing the ability of the landscape to retain water and climate resistance.
