The Vile Monarch studio unveils Floodland and presents it as a societal survival game, at the crossroads between survival games, city-builder and strategy game. How to ensure the survival of humanity following the consequences of climate change?
Can video games draw inspiration from current events? Obviously, yes, this is not new and the trend is clearly intensifying. In the age of an uncertain future, “survival games” have never been so present: some approach survival in a very cathartic way, others in a more subtle or indirect way, and still others seize of the question of the future of humanity in a very direct way. This is clearly the case of the studio Vile Monarchwho announce Floodland and presents it as a societal survival game.
The independent developer makes the observation of global warming, that humanity has undoubtedly seized the question too late to avoid the consequences and is therefore interested in the followingmath: how do we survive when global warming led to the melting of the poles and therefore the submersion of the coasts, and that this post-apocalyptic Earth is now made up of flooded territories and marshes? It will be necessary to harvest the planet’s meager remaining resources and optimize them, it will be necessary to develop new skills to adapt to a new world and to establish laws which will allow the survivors to cohabit – for example in an egalitarian utopia or a magnanimous dictatorship, by making sure to embark humanity towards a common objective (the objective of the game consists in reunifying humanity) but also by knowing how to treat the recalcitrants.
The program is vast and while waiting to discover concretely if Floodland has prophetic virtues, the game will be launched on Steam next November 15. Until then, Floodland is revealed in a first trailer broadcast as part of the Future Games Show, on the sidelines of the gamescom 2022.
