Flooding worsens in Chalco

CHALCO, State of Mexico (El Universal).— The rains of the last few hours increased the flooded area of Chalco, mainly in the Emiliano Zapata and Jacalones 2 neighborhoods.

In this last community, the residents feel abandoned by the authorities, as they say that all the help has been concentrated in the Culturas de México neighborhood and they are not being listened to.

Residents themselves are filling sacks with earth to place at the entrances to their houses to stop more water from coming in, because some connected pumps they bought to extract water from their property, but since the drainage system is blocked, it comes back up.

“We are filling sacks to try to cover the entrances to the houses. About twenty are needed for each house, and we have been doing it since yesterday. We are doing it ourselves, the authorities arrived the day before yesterday, but nothing has been resolved. The situation has become much worse because of the rain yesterday (Saturday),” said Luciano Villalobos, one of the inhabitants of the area.

The inhabitants of this community near Culturas de México walk through the sewage, many only wearing sandals because they cannot afford to buy boots.

Due to the rising water level, they themselves closed the streets to prevent cars from driving, because if they do, they throw water towards the houses and it gets into the homes that have already been flooded for days.

The situation has not improved since August 2 for most families in these communities because the rain has not let up.

A vaccination module was set up in this colony where victims go to receive doses against hepatitis, pneumococcus and tetanus, although some of them told the nurses of the State of Mexico Health Institute that they do not have symptoms of any disease.

Residents of the streets of September 16, Tulipanes, on the corner of Benito Juárez, drafted a document addressed to the Morena mayor Miguel Gutiérrez Morales, to ask him for vactor trucks, drinking water, a community dining room, antibacterial gel, boots, bathrooms and face masks, among other supplies.

Avenue closed

José María Martínez Avenue, where the Santa Martha-Chalco Trolleybus units will circulate, was flooded and residents closed the road because the vehicles could become stranded.

No access to the Red Cross

The Red Cross is located on that road and people cannot enter because the water level is approximately 30 centimeters high.

Flooded businesses

All businesses in that area were unable to open yesterday, Sunday, because the liquid entered the premises. They claim that the drainage works carried out in that area are deficient, which has not allowed them to remove the accumulated rainwater and wastewater.
