The tunnel system of the terrorist organization Hamas is probably the most difficult problem for the Israeli army. Now the Israelis have begun the controversial measure of pumping seawater into the underground passages and forcing the terrorists to the surface.
So now the time has come: the Israeli army has begun to flood Hamas’ tunnel system. This is supposed to be a test run for now. To do this, seawater will be pumped into some tunnels to find out whether the method is suitable for destroying the underground system on a large scale. Israel told the US that only tunnels where no hostages were suspected would be flooded. Because that was one of the big sticking points: What if at least 136 Israeli hostages are still being held in the tunnels by Hamas, whose lives must be protected at all costs?
At a press conference on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden was asked regarding the floods. He replied: “It is very difficult as far as flooding the tunnels is concerned: it is said that there are certainly no hostages in them. But I don’t know that for sure.” He then added: “What I know for sure: Every death of civilians is an absolute tragedy.” Most recently, Israel’s Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi thought the idea of flooding the extensive tunnel system with seawater was a good idea designated. For tactical reasons, the army has never specifically commented on the fear of putting the hostages’ lives at risk; Israel has always remained very tight-lipped regarding where hostages might be and what knowledge the military had regarding it.
