Flooded basements, damaged roofs, no electricity. Supercell passed through Mielec

On Sunday, storms passed through parts of the country. The most difficult situation was in Mielec (Podkarpackie), which was hit by a supercell storm. The wind damaged roofs and broke trees, and basements were also flooded. Some houses in the Rzeszów and Krosno areas still do not have electricity.

Due to storms passing through Poland, firefighters across the country intervened 498 times on Sunday. The most in the following provinces: Podkarpackie – 312, Lubuskie – 35, Mazowieckie – 22 – the State Fire Service reported on the X portal.

Damaged roofs, broken trees, flooding

In the Podkarpacie region, the largest number of interventions was in the Strzyżów district, where firefighters were called out 124 times to remove the effects of storms. In the Mielec district, they received 77 such calls. A supercell storm, the most dangerous and violent type of storm, passed through Mielec.

– In 14 cases, we helped secure damaged roofs on farm buildings and residential houses. We also secured farms at risk of flooding with sandbags – informed the spokesman for the Podkarpacie firefighters, Brigadier Marcin Betleja.

As he said, firefighters also removed broken trees and branches lying on power lines and streets, helped pump water out of flooded basements, removed mud brought by rain onto roads and cleared road culverts.

– Something horrible, I’ve never seen it before in my life. (…) You mightn’t see anything. The hail was hitting the windows so much, it was horrible – said a resident of Mielec in an interview with TVN24.

Homes without electricity

Some homes still do not have electricity. – The restriction applies to 357 recipients in the Rzeszów and Krosno area – said Tomasz Węgrzynowicz from the Provincial Crisis Management Center in Rzeszów on Monday morning. On Sunday late followingnoon, there was no electricity in almost 8,500 homes.
